Uno Minda invest ₹550 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐞 in new EV plant in Maharastra

Leading Indian automotive component and systems manufacturer Uno Minda Limited has announced a major greenfield investment of ₹550 crore to establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Maharashtra. Set up through its subsidiary, Uno Minda Auto Innovations Private Limited (UMAIPL), the incoming plant will be strategically positioned in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly known as Aurangabad). This critical production facility will explicitly focus on producing high-voltage electric powertrain architectures tailored for four-wheeler passenger electric vehicles (EVs).
Pushing Localized Electric Powertrain Capabilities
The heavy financial injection underscores the vendor’s transition toward an electronics-heavy and technology-led automotive components portfolio. According to corporate statements, the ₹550 crore capital expenditure layout will be funded utilizing a combination of debt and equity, with outlays phased systematically over the next two years.
Greenfield Commissioning by Q2 FY28
The greenfield infrastructure asset is formally expected to reach full commissioning by the second quarter of fiscal year 2028 (Q2 FY28).
Backed by Major Anchor Customer Orders
The physical implementation of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar factory layout is significantly accelerated by the receipt of substantial production commitments. Uno Minda confirmed that the strategic manufacturing site expansion is backed by highly valuable new product orders for advanced assemblies, specifically secured from a key anchor customer in the passenger automotive segment.
Advanced System Engineering Focus
The technological capabilities of the plant are designed around manufacturing highly sophisticated electric propulsion components. The shop floors will primarily assemble and manufacture:
- Electric Drive Units (EDU): Integrating electric traction motors, power electronics, and gearboxes.
- Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT): Providing smart dual-clutch transmission pathways optimized for hybrid-electric drivetrains.
Consolidating Manufacturing Dominance in Maharashtra
The announcement marks the second major electric powertrain plant introduced by the auto component major in rapid succession within the state of Maharashtra. UMAIPL is currently in the advanced stages of setting up another high-voltage components manufacturing site in Khed City, Pune, which is firmly slated to begin regular commercial operations during the second half of the current fiscal year (H2 FY27).
The ₹1,200 Crore EV Business Blueprint
The dual-plant approach forms part of Uno Minda’s overarching green mobility commercial roadmap. The group has earmarked roughly ₹1,200 crore in cumulative capital expenditures specifically dedicated to expanding its electric vehicle components business verticals. Corporate management projects that this large-scale production ramp-up will eventually scale peak EV division revenues past the ₹2,500 crore to ₹3,000 crore mark over the coming years.
Commenting on the long-term vision, Ravi Mehra, Managing Director of Uno Minda Limited, emphasized that expanding dedicated capacities enables the group to drastically lead the domestic localization of high-voltage powertrain designs. This approach directly insulates global automotive partners against supply-chain volatility while lowering overall component import dependencies to foster a resilient, independent EV manufacturing footprint within India.
